Dukkar Painting from Nepal
A thangka is a Tibetan painting that is traditionally used as a support for one’s meditation practice. The imagery depicted in Tibetan paintings provides a guide for the elaborate visualizations that one does in Tibetan Buddhist practice. In Tibetan homes and monasteries, thangkas are considered sacred objects and are often placed above shrines.
Sitatapatra is brilliant white, radiating with love and compassion and her body is adorned with various ornaments. In her most common form, she is depicted with 1,000 heads, 1,000 arms, 1,000 legs, and 1,000,000 eyes. In her two central hands, she holds a dharma wheel and the handle of the white parasol from which she takes her name. On her other hands, she holds a multitude of various weapons.
She is the seated figure with 18 arms which symbolize (the Hindu way, not exactly a celestial body) the many skillful means of Tantra. She is the source of all the Buddhas of past, present and future and had unimaginable power of blessings.Cundi is attended by two dragons (naga) kings who stand guard by her lotus throne. These two dragon kings are Nanda and Upananda. Devotees pray to Maha Cundi Bodhisattva for protection from all kinds of harm.
