Description

Mahakala Thangka is a renowned Tibetan Buddhist painting or scroll featuring Mahakala, the wrathful protector of Buddhism signifying strength, evolution, and hindrance clearance.

Mahakala is usually depicted in a thangka as a powerful, fearsome figure, with a deep blue or black hue. His fierce eyes and sharp fangs reflect his strength and power. He might have four or six arms that each hold symbols with specific meanings. The right hand of Mahakala is often seen holding a curved knife, symbolizing the cutting away of any obstacles. His left hand typically grasps a skull cup that holds an elixir, exemplifying the transformation of negativity into enlightenment. His other hands may be depicted with a trident, vajra (thunderbolt), damaru (hand drum), or noose, each conveying different forms of power and deterrence.
