Description

Shakyamuni Buddha, commonly referred to as Gautama Buddha is the historical Buddha who lived in ancient India around the 6th century BCE.. His teachings serve as the foundation of the Dharma, or Buddhist path. His sitting position, also known as the "Bhumisparsa mudra" or the "Earth-touching gesture," is shown in thangka paintings. His left hand is in his lap, signifying focused meditation, while his right hand is on the ground, symbolizing his enlightenment. He is shown in thangkas wearing the clothes of a monk and with a calm look on his face.

He wears an ushnisha, which stands for his spiritual understanding, and has lengthened earlobes, which signify his denial of materialistic attachments. These artworks can be utilized as meditation tools and provide a visual picture of his teachings.

Importance of Shakyamuni Buddha Thangka:
Shakyamuni Buddha thangkas are important because they serve as visual representations of the Buddha, symbol of enlightenment, object of devotion, meditation aid, and teaching tool. Buddhist practitioners may engage in prostrations, offerings, and prayers in front of a thangka to express reverence, cultivate faith, and generate positive merit.
