Description

Shakyamuni, more commonly referred to as Gautama Buddha, is a renowned figure thought to have lived in India in the 6th century BCE. His teachings, which form the basis of much Buddhist doctrine, are often depicted in artwork depicting the "Earth-touching gesture" (aka Bhumisparsa mudra). This depicts his iconic sitting stance, wearing typical monk's clothing, with a serene face and his left hand resting in his lap to symbolize meditative focus. His right hand is touching the ground, representing his enlightenment. The ushnisha on top of his head indicates spiritual knowledge and his lengthened earlobes denote rejection of materialism. This style of artwork is revered for its use in meditation, in turn providing a visual representation of his teachings.

Importance of Shakyamuni Buddha Thangka
Shakyamuni Buddha thangkas are important because they serve as visual representations of the Buddha, symbol of enlightenment, object of devotion, meditation aid, and teaching tool. Buddhist practitioners may engage in prostrations, offerings, and prayers in front of a thangka to express reverence, cultivate faith, and generate positive merit .
