Description
Chundi (also referred to as Cundi) is a revered bodhisattva and a manifestation of the venerated Great Mother of Wisdom, Mahapratisara. This deity of compassion and wisdom is central to Esoteric Buddhism, especially in the Shingon, Tendai, and Huayan spiritual schools. A thangka is a traditional Tibetan Buddhist painting, usually depicting religious and metaphysical themes, treasured for its complexity, messages, and religious significance.
Chundi Thangka Painting shows this multi-armed deity with 18 arms, each of which is clutching symbolic objects indicating her ability to protect and assist others. This is a representation of her capacity to act in multiple ways, and of her combination of compassion (karuna) and wisdom (prajna). This artwork portrays her loving wish to support those in search of enlightenment and her insight to guide them.
Chundi is widely esteemed for her compassion and wisdom. Practitioners often invoke her to eliminate barriers, atone for misdeeds, and advance on the path to enlightenment. Thangka paintings of Chundi serve as objects of veneration, visual meditation enhancements, and sources of motivation for those studying Esoteric Buddhism.
