Description
Thangkas are a form of Tibetan painting commonly used in Tibetan Buddhist practice. Their imagery provides a visual guide for practitioners during meditation and visualization activities. Sacred in both monasteries and Tibetan homes, thangkas are hung above shrines as a symbol of reverence.
This intricately-crafted Thangka painting features Mahakala, a wrathful Buddhist deity known for guarding Dharma from degeneration and delusion. Mahakala is believed to be an emanation of Avalokitesvara and Chakrasamvara and provides strength to overcome life's obstacles. Mahakala is acknowledged as a premier Dharmapala, a protector of Dharma or Universal Laws. His headdress is adorned with five skulls, representing the transition of the five 'kleshas' or detrimental emotions to the five wisdoms. The countenance of Mahakala serves to scare off evil spirits and keep out detrimental energies, thoughts, and behaviors.
