Description
Rahula is the subject of a Tibetan Buddhist thangka titled Rahula. Thangkas, often depicting deities, mandalas, or spiritual motifs, are typically painted on cotton or silk. Representations of the wrathful Nyingma protector Rahula feature nine heads, four limbs, a thousand eyes, and a distinct angry visage in the center of its abdomen. This iconic Buddhist guardian is believed to be of Tibetan origin, and is particularly associated with the early Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. The lower body of the deity is commonly depicted as a coiled snake spirit.
Rahula-style Thangkas are highly regarded by Buddhists as teaching tools, items for meditation, and sacred artworks. Skilled practitioners must use complex procedures, materials, and regulations when creating them, adhering to longstanding iconographic conventions.
