Description
This "Four Harmonious Friends" thangka painting is a classic Tibetan Buddhist creation that depicts a renowned Buddhist parable conveying the power of collaboration between four creatures.
The bottom of the composition usually features an elephant, symbolizing the strongest member of the group. It is said to be a representation of the past life of the Buddha. On the elephant is a monkey, which stands for strength, agility, and the capacity to hold a branch or fruit. The hare or rabbit underneath the monkey implies a calmer and smaller creature, denoting the harmony between entities of differing abilities. Lastly, at the back of the hare or rabbit is a bird carrying fruit or a twig, symbolizing the smallest and most delicate part of the group.
Thangka paintings of the Four Harmonious Friends serve as visual symbols that remind us of the value of cooperation and harmony. These thangkas are largely found in Tibetan Buddhist sites, for worshipful contemplation and as exemplification of Buddhist ethical teachings.
