Tibetan Manjushri Thangka
Description
A thangka is a Tibetan painting that is traditionally used as a support for meditation practice. The imagery depicted in Tibetan paintings provides a guide for the elaborate visualizations that one does in Tibetan Buddhist practice. In Tibetan homes and monasteries, thangkas are considered sacred objects and are often placed above shrines.
Manjushri, is a figure of significant authority in Mahayana sutra literature, particularly in the Prajnaparamita and Avatamsaka sutras. Representing the power of wisdom, he is acclaimed to bring forth insight which leads to spiritual liberation for countless sentient beings. Across the scope of Mahayana Buddhism, he is seen as the Bodhisattva of Wisdom; in Vajrayana Buddhism, however, he is viewed as a fully-attained Buddha. It is this progression, from aspirant Bodhisattva to liberated Buddha, which is often referred to as the Bodhisattva Path. He is also among the revered Trio (Three) of Bodhisattvas. His mantra is Om Ah Ra Pa Tsa Na Dhi.
