In this thangka painting, Lord Buddha is depicted in the center, with Tara on the right. Lord Buddha is shown in the Bhumisparsha mudra, which represents his enlightenment and his calling upon the earth to bear witness to it. Tara is shown in the Tarasana mudra, with her left hand in the gesture of fearlessness and her right hand extended in the gesture of granting wishes. The painting is rich in symbolism and meaning with each element representing an aspect of Buddhist philosophy and practice. The lotus flower on which Lord Buddha sits represents his purity and detachment from the material world. Tara is shown with one foot on a lotus, representing her ability to transcend the suffering of the world.
